On Thursday evening, August 5th, Tamara's water broke. We went to the hospital, where we were surprised to learn that Abby had turned from a vertex (head down) position to a transverse (side to side) position. With all of her amniotic fluid gone, there was no way to turn her, so we had to have a c-section. Abby arrived at 10:59 pm on August 5th. She weighed 4 lb 15 oz and was 17 1/2 inches long. The c-section went very smoothly. We were joking with the doctors and talking the whole time. They were playing our favorite Christian radio station in the OR and it happened to be playing Rich Mullins' (one of our all-time favorite singers) "Oh God, You are my God," when Abby was delivered. Very cool. Kind of surreal feeling, knowing that you are being cut open and not feeling anything.
She was 36 1/2 weeks along, so almost full-term. She did have some breathing problems at birth, so was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at 12 hrs old.
She did well in the NICU and was discharged home on Monday with no special instructions or needs.
She is a very sweet baby. Sleeps very well and is feeding well too. Nate and Anna think she's pretty great and love playing with her and holding her.
Thank you to everyone who prayed for us. The doctor said it was actually a blessing that Abby turned sideways, necessitating the c-section. She had a very short umbilical cord and it was wrapped around her neck twice, so if we'd had a vaginal delivery she may have experienced problems. It was much better to have a calm, non-urgent c-section than have to be rushing back for a c-section in an emergency.
